A Clinical Analysis of the Perforated Appendicitis

Abstract
This study is clinical analysis of 508 patients who were operated on under the diagnosis of acute appendicitis and then the pathologic diagnosis was confirmed at the Seoul Red Cross Hospital during the last 3 years from Mar. 1981 to Feb. 1983. The results obtained were as follows;
1) In acute appendicitis, the ratio between male and female was 1.12 : 1 and age incidence was most prevalent in the 1st. 2nd. decade, comprising 51.8% of cases.
2) In Perforated appendicitis, the ratio between male and female was 1.15 : 1 -and age incidence was most prevalent, in the 5th.-6th. decade, comparing 54.5% of cases.
3) In seasonal incidence of appendicitis, acute appendicitis occurred most frequently. in the summer but perforated appendicitis- occurred most- frequently in the autumn.
4) While the 63.2% the patients with no perforated appendicitis were admitted to this hospital within 48 hours from the onset of symptom, most of the patients (84.7%) with the perforated appendicitis were admitted on 48 hours or more from the onset of the symptom.
5) In 79.5% a of the appendicitis, the leukocyte count was over 10, 000/mm3, but there was no significant difference in the degree of leukocytosis between no perforated appendicitis and perforated.
6) The complications occurred mainly n the perforated appendicitis (73..9% of all complications), and wound infection was most frequent (70.5% of all appendicitis).
7) The average, hospital days were 5.92 in no perforated appendicitis and 12.56 in perforated appendicitis.
